Teaching Vaccinations and Adaptive Immunity With HHMI BioInteractive
To accommodate educators' schedules, this workshop will be offered twice. Workshop content will be the same at both sessions.
- Session 1: Monday, January 9, 4:00–5:30 PM EASTERN
- Session 2: Tuesday, February 7, 5:30–7:00 PM EASTERN
Note that the workshop time is in US Eastern time zone. Please verify the corresponding time in your local area.
With vaccines in the news, students often wonder about how they’re developed, what the types of vaccines are, what is found in them, and how each works. In this workshop, we’ll investigate the different types of vaccines, including attenuated virus, DNA, mRNA, or recombinant protein vaccine, and use BioInteractive’s Immune System Click & Learn to discover how the different types of vaccines can similarly prime the immune system to form long-term protection.
We’ll also discuss strategies for teaching the immune system in various courses at different levels. Following the timeline of immune response, participants will discover how the response changes with vaccination. We’ll model how to have students apply their knowledge of the immune system to weigh the pros and cons to each vaccine type. Lastly, participants will brainstorm and share ideas for implementation in their own classrooms.
This workshop is for undergraduate educators who teach courses such as microbiology, immunology, or virology at 2- or 4-year institutions, and high school educators who teach advanced courses (AP, IB, etc.). Facilitators will model strategies for synchronous online and in-person instruction.
- The workshop will be hosted via Zoom meeting.
- Our workshops actively engage participants and often feature small group work in breakout rooms to build community, foster discussion, and model classroom practice.
- Workshop attendees will receive a certificate of participation and access to the free BioInteractive resources modeled in the workshop.
Live transcription will be available in the main Zoom meeting room. If you require live transcription in the breakout rooms, or any other accommodations in order to fully participate in the workshop, please indicate this on the registration form.
