Making Student Thinking Visible: Providing Feedback and Catalyzing Metacognition Using HHMI BioInteractive’s Model Builder
This workshop will be offered on Wednesday, February 28, 6:00–7:30PM EASTERN. Note that the workshop time is in US Eastern time zone. Please verify the corresponding time in your local area.
How do we know what our students are thinking? Constructing models allows students to visualize their understanding of concepts in biology, including their misconceptions. However, large class sizes often make it challenging for instructors to provide feedback on these models.
In this workshop, we’ll guide participants through the use of HHMI BioInteractive’s Model Builder web tool and demonstrate how to implement this tool in your classrooms, assignments, and assessments. We’ll also discuss using Model Builder’s built-in self-check function to allow students to use just-in-time feedback to revise their models as they progress through a concept. Lastly, we’ll connect use of models with other pedagogical practices including backwards design and enhancing student metacognition.
This workshop is for educators who teach any level of high school biology, including introductory and advanced courses (AP, IB, etc.), including Anatomy & Physiology and environmental science courses, and undergraduate educators who teach at 2- or 4-year institutions. Facilitators will model strategies for online and in-person instruction.
- The workshop will be hosted via Zoom meeting.
- Our workshops actively engage participants and often feature small group work in breakout rooms to build community, foster discussion, and model classroom practice.
- Workshop attendees will receive a certificate of participation and access to the free BioInteractive resources modeled in the workshop.
Live transcription will be available in the main Zoom meeting room. If you require live transcription in the breakout rooms, or any other accommodations in order to fully participate in the workshop, please indicate this on the registration form.
