Cell Cycle, Cancer, and Guardian Genes: Constructing Scientific Arguments with HHMI BioInteractive Resources
This workshop will be offered Thursday, July 20, 6:00–7:30 PM EASTERN. Note that the workshop time is in US Eastern time zone. Please verify the corresponding time in your local area.
What factors cause cells to become cancerous and form tumors? During this workshop, we will explore a series of lessons that guides students through a set of free, classroom-ready HHMI BioInteractive resources, including how to generate observations and questions using an anchoring phenomenon, explore the Eukaryotic Cell Cycle and Cancer Click & Learn to gather evidence, and use the Identify and Interpret (I2) method for data analysis. Educators will also engage with structured argumentation to help their students explain how cancer results from a disruption in the cell cycle and the events that cause a cell to become cancerous. Participants will leave the workshop with a lesson sequence to support their students in achieving these goals, as well as extension activities for advanced (AP) biology. A version of this workshop was previously offered by BioInteractive in 2022.
