There have been several national calls to increase the levels of critical thinking in college classrooms, particularly in science classrooms. HHMI BioInteractive is launching an Assessment Builder in 2022. The goal of this tool is to deliver high-quality, peer-reviewed, selected-response questions in introductory life sciences that align with learning objectives and reflect science practices. HHMI will compensate for submitted questions, provided they meet a minimum set of criteria and adhere to the terms outlined. In this workshop series, Rebecca Orr and Peggy Brickman will provide an opportunity to learn more about best practices in constructing and peer reviewing selected-response items:
- In the asynchronous work prior to Session 1, participants will use the Integrating Testing and Learning workbook to review common mistakes that faculty make when writing these types of questions and review psychometric guidelines for writing effective selected-response questions.
- In Session 1 of the workshop, participants will spend time working in small groups to identify and improve their own questions. Session one will wrap up with a discussion and small group activity to prepare attendees to convert open-response items into selected-response items before the next session.
- In the asynchronous work prior to Session 2, participants will spend time converting one open-response item of their choice to a selected-response item and will review principles of test analysis and item review.
- In Session 2, faculty will share and receive critical feedback on the items they constructed and will discuss generating aligned sets of items for formative and summative assessment. Participants will walk away with several peer-reviewed, selected-response items that may be ready for submission to the Assessment Builder.
