Sex Determination

The Future Biology of Sex: Science Fiction Perspectives

By Joan Slonczewski

What if humans had only one reproductive mating type, or more than two? Would human individuals or societies behave in ways that are fundamentally different? What will happen as humans increasingly control the molecular basis of sex determination? These questions continue to intrigue many science fiction writers.

The novels described here address these questions in three categories: the "war between the sexes"; the molecular and cellular biology of reproduction; and the possibility of a third sex, perhaps defined in a completely different way from male or female. Each entry s accompanied by discussion questions for teachers, students, and other readers. Study guides for several of the books are also noted.
